Paul is teaching Timothy how to increase godliness in the church by protecting it against saboteurs. He’s showing how to spot false teachers by their message and damaging results. Their underlying motivation is personal gain. He contrasts this with true godly gain with contentment, and further teaches out how love of gain can greatly harm the flock, damaging faith & unity.
